Why iPhone uses HEIC
HEIC is designed to store high-quality photos efficiently and is common when iPhone Camera settings use High Efficiency. The file may appear after AirDrop, cable transfer, or cloud download even if Photos displayed it normally on the phone. JPG is larger in many cases, but it is accepted by more websites, Windows apps, and document systems.

Check the file before converting
Confirm that the file really ends in .heic and that it opens correctly on the source device. Live Photos may contain both an image and a video component; converting the still image does not preserve the motion. If the image carries location data, decide whether you want that metadata in the copy you share.

Why browser conversion may fail
HEIC decoding depends on operating-system codecs and browser support. Some browser and device combinations cannot decode it locally, so a privacy-first website cannot reliably promise conversion without uploading the file to a server. A clear unsupported message is safer than producing a blank or incorrectly oriented image.

Export a JPG on Apple devices
On an iPhone or iPad, sharing through some compatible apps can create a more compatible copy. On a Mac, Preview can open the image and export it as JPEG with an adjustable quality level. Work from a duplicate if you want to preserve the HEIC original and all of its metadata.

A practical fallback
If local decoding is unavailable, export a JPG from the phone or Mac first instead of repeatedly renaming the extension—renaming does not convert the data. For future photos, iPhone Camera settings can use Most Compatible, though this changes how new captures are stored and may use more space.
